Smoke has filled the skies in many parts of Iowa the past few days.
Meteorologist Kurt Kotenberg with the National Weather Service says more than 180 Canadian wildfires are producing smoke that has spread throughout much of the Midwest.
“Basically, the upper level winds in the jet stream has been transporting a lot of the smoke from Canada here to the Upper Midwest,” Kotenberg says. “A lot of that is from the front that passed through the area [on Tuesday].”
Kotenberg says the additional pollution could cause hazards for some.
“The smoky air has adverse impacts on the sensitive part of the public, say they have heart disease or respiratory issues, a lot of this air can make breathing difficult for them,” he says.
The National Weather Service predicts the hazy conditions will lift as the week progresses, but more smoky weather is in the forecast for the weekend.
