A Knoxville man was arrested in Pella late Wednesday after he allegedly broke in and stole gas from a rural Marion County home. Joel Allen Followill is charged with second degree burglary, a class C felony.
According to court records, the homeowner of a house on Lowe Drive near Harvey spotted a man walking around the outside on the property. He found a man in the garage, who police say was positively identified later as Followill. The homeowner says Followill asked for a cell phone to make a call. During the phone conversation, the alleged victim says the man described himself as “Joel” and stated to the other party that he was out of gas.
After making a call, the witness said Followill fled the garage, got into his car and headed north on T-17. The homeowner called 911 and gave a description of the vehicle.
At approximately 9 p.m., the Pella Police Department stopped a car matching that information, and officers arrested Followill on Huber Street near East 1st and Main. During an investigation at the home, the family told a Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy that they were missing gasoline.
Followill is in Marion County Jail on $11,000 bond and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for July 24th. Earlier this year, Followill received a 12 year suspended prison sentence and probation in connection to a string of car parts thefts last year.
