Fiddler

Union Street Players will be bringing a musical classic to the stage at the Pella Community Center this week.

The first of seven performances of Fiddler on the Roof will open at 7 p.m. Friday. Director of Music Anne Petrie says the songs will take the audience back to 1905 Russia.

“It’s very listener friendly music,” Petrie says. “It definitely captures the flavor of Russian-Jewish music around the beginning of the 20th century.”

She says musicals tap into the human spirit, and most people who attend the shows will find it easy relate to the different characters and themes.

“With musicals, there really is an effort to dig into the lives of ordinary people, and in this case, people who lived in a very different time and different culture,” Petrie says.

“But actually–given Pella’s heritage, and the notion of people who have come to settle with a particular religious identity–I think there are some things that Pella audiences can relate to.”
