One way to have success on the baseball diamond at the high school level is to make the routine plays, be effective on the mound, and of course, be well-versed at the plate. Though the offense wasn’t entirely there for Pella Christian in 2015, they more than made up for it with their defense and pitching. The Eagles went 11 – 21 in 2014, and were second-worst in the conference with a .914 fielding percentage. PC’s catching staff also only threw out 19% of runners trying to steal a base. This season was a different story. They committed fewer errors, wound up third in fielding percentage with a .944, and their backstops had nearly a 57% success rate in catching runners swiping a bag. Coach Nate Johnson says a lot of their success this year can be attributed to limiting the extra outs they were giving teams. Johnson also says a lot of it has to do with their catchers, which is led by Scott Haveman behind the plate. The Eagles went 13 – 17 this season.
