Up to seven years in prison is the sentence handed down against a former Knoxville teacher and coach accused of sexually abusing a student.

34-year-old Troy Rider pled guilty in April to sexual exploitation as pattern and practice, a Class D felony, and aggravated sexual exploitation.

Marion County Attorney Ed Bull told KNIA/KRLS News, “There were no winners today. Two families have been devastated. Mr. Rider made a series of unacceptable decisions that have had serious consequences. I hope this sentence of 7 years in prison, and then being on parole for 10 additional years sends a strong message to our community that sexual relations between students and teachers is unacceptable. I praise Lt. Fuller of the Knoxville Police Department for his work on this case, and continue to be amazed by the strength of young victims to overcome abuse and trauma. Hopefully our community can now start to heal.”

Rider was arrested in March 2014 after a report of sexual abuse was filed against him with the Knoxville Police Department. He would resign from Knoxville Schools later that month.

Statements were provided by the victim and her mother prior to sentencing. The victim told the court that she refuses to let Rider control her any longer and that she is now free. Rider also provided a statement before being sentenced; apologizing to several people, including the victim, her family, his wife and family as well.

Rider will also be on parole for 10 years and must register as a sex offender upon release.
