Central College Athletic Training and Pella Community Ambulance are holding a special training session next week.

The program will take place next Wednesday, August 26th from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Helen J. Hislop Building. Topics include how to properly handle athletes with heat illness and spine injuries. Cost of attendance is free for National Athletic Training Association (NATA) Members and current state licensed Emergency Care providers, and for all others it will be $15.

6:30pm – Heat Illness: Current Evidence-Based Practice for the Athletic Trainer and EMT – Dustin Briggs, MS, ATC, LAT, CSCS, NREMT

Basic heat illnesses common in sport and physical activity. Topics will include prevention, differential diagnosis and treatment of all illnesses. A discussion on supplies and emergency policies that should be in place to handle such conditions will also be presented. The session will make reference to the NATA’s Position Statement on Exertional Heat Illness

7:30pm – Spine Boarding and Equipment Removal of the Spine Injured Athlete – Treaver Willis
Pella Ambulance and Dustin Briggs MS, ATC, LAT, CSCS, NREMT

The seminar will focus on quick assessment, rapid removal of multiple styles of equipment, proper in-line stabilization, and multiple variations of transfer and immobilization including both prone and supine positions. The session will reference the NATA Position Statement on Acute Management of the Cervical Spine-Injured Athlete, Management of the Helmeted Athlete with Suspected Cervical Spine Injury from the AJSM, and Prehospital Care of the Spine-Injured Athlete a document from the Inter-Association Task Force for Appropriate Care of the Spine-Injured Athlete.
