Getting down 26 – 8 in the first quarter, the Central women’s basketball team stormed back, had a lead in the third quarter, but came up empty to the No. 16-ranked Wartburg Knights on Saturday, 67 – 54. The Dutch limited Wartburg to just ten second-quarter tallies while scoring 22 of their own to crawl back into the game. They used the momentum to further chip away in the second half. Central’s lone lead came at 48 – 47 with around 2:00 left in the third period, but Wartburg went on a run and the Dutch only could muster six points in the final frame. Claire Marburger had 16, Jessica Helton scored 13, and Kristin Hubert had 11 more off the bench. The women fall to 3 – 10 overall and 0 – 2 in league play. Turnovers doomed Central’s men in their 82 – 79 loss to the Knights. Colby Taylor scored 12 of his game-high 26 points in the first 5:30 of the affair, but Central was held to one shot on several possessions in the first half. Wartburg took the lead late in the game, and the Dutch could not connect on some wide-open opportunities down the stretch. Ryan Kunkel had six blocks, and Pete Walker scored 16 points. Central’s men are 9 – 4 overall and 1 – 1 in the Iowa Conference. They return home next week, with a match-up against Dubuque on Wednesday.
