Coach Craig Douma called it a dangerous game when describing a winless Coe team, and rightfully so, as the Kohawks beat the Central men’s basketball squad to complete a home sweep of the Dutch on Wednesday. Five different Coe players were in double figures, with four of them being starters. Neither team really found their stroke in the first half, as Central trailed 31 – 20 at intermission. They closed the gap to five with a quick 6 – 0 run to begin the second 20 minutes, and even had a one-point lead with seven minutes left, but couldn’t hang on. Taylor recorded another double-double with a game-high 31 points and 13 rebounds. Central’s women were outscored 62 – 38 after three periods and dropped a 76 – 54 decision to begin the night in Cedar Rapids. Claire Marburger turned in her best league performance of the season with a 27-point, 14-rebound effort. The game was won beyond the arc for Coe, who hit an astounding 14 three-pointers, while Central went just 2-for-18. The men fall to 3 – 2 in league play, the women are 1 – 4, and they’ll hit the road to Storm Lake on Saturday for two more, in a doubleheader that can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS starting at 1:45 p.m.
