It was not an average night in the Maytag Student Center for dozens of Central College students.

They gathered to learn more about something that is not typically taught in an ordinary classroom–the Iowa Caucus.

The Student Development Center put together a mock caucus for students and Pella residents to become more engaged in politics.

The evening began with an informational presentation of the caucus process, followed by a separation of Democratic and Republican voters in attendance. During the Democratic caucus, tensions quickly rose as many pushed for undecided voters to select their preferred nominee.

As opposed to the Democrats, Republican attendees discussed issues of concern and voted by way of ballot.

Dan Dankert participated with the GOP, and says the event was a great success and helped many become more educated on this important part of the voting process.

“For most people it was really eye-opening, we had about 25 people up there, who were learning about the process and got to share their vote tonight and get their feet wet before the big night Monday,” he told KNIA/KRLS News.

Organizers say this was the first time for many in attendance to have the opportunity to learn about the caucus.
