A Washington D.C. photographer is on a mission to document the Columbias in America, and he’s in Marion County now to photograph our community of Columbia for a museum exhibit and book about his journey.

Columbia is the historic and poetic name used for our country during its colonial history. Francis Smith’s project is called “America by Another Name,” and his journey will take him through 33 states to photograph 50 towns, cities, counties, ships and universities with the name Columbia. Smith tells KNIA/KRLS News that he wanted to visit Columbia, Iowa during the caucus season to experience it.
