Just five pins were the difference between Pella High and Newton’s boys’ bowling teams in Saturday’s Little Hawkeye Conference meet in West Des Moines. The Cardinals prevailed, 2617 – 2612 in the end. Newton had the edge in the individual games in round one, 1788 – 1731, but the Little Dutch made a strong surge in the baker’s games, with an 881 – 829 advantage, which was not quite enough. Alex Bragg shot a 211 game and led the team with a 378 series. Dakota Shalin rolled a 370. The Eagles’ boys were fifth with a 2,212 final score, just 33 pins out of fourth. Max Kolb scored a 354 series, and Mac Sarver put up a 342. PC’s girls finished third on their side of the league meet; Taylor Bolt rolled a 291, and Abbie Vander Molen shot a 266. Pella’s girls were shorthanded once again but fought hard with a 1,311 total effort. Pella will see Newton again, plus Oskaloosa and Urbandale in the Class 2A district and regional meet this Tuesday on the very same set of lanes in West Des Moines at Val Lanes Recreation Center.
