What looked like a sure thing at halftime became a little too close for comfort in the second half for the Pella High boys’ basketball team. Ultimately, though, the Little Dutch would hang on and beat Bondurant-Farrar last night, 62 – 50, in the Class 3A District 13 final. Despite the slower tempo the Bluejays were playing, Pella still raced out to a 17-point lead after the second quarter, thanks to several made baskets from outside the arc. The Little Dutch got into some foul trouble and had some problems cleaning up the boards, but clutch free throw shooting and an even stiffer defense prevailed down the stretch. Assistant Coach Phil Hemming says it came down to his team executing their game plan better than the Bluejays. Will Warner led Pella with 18 points, and Ryan Van Wyk scored 11. Pella is now 21 – 1 on the season, and they head up to Johnston High School on Monday for the Class 3A Substate 7 Final versus Ballard, where the winner will play in the state tournament starting on March 7. The Dutch defeated the Bombers very early in the season, 76 – 49.
