The Pella Fire Department had a busy Monday as they responded to numerous calls in the area.

Pella Rural Fire Trucks responded to a pair of grass fires along Old Highway 102 in Mahaska County at 8:41 a.m. and at 1468 Adams Avenue for an out-of-control blaze at 10:25 a.m. They also assisted at a gas line hit on Jefferson Street near Pella Regional Health Center, which was shut off just before 11:30 a.m. by multiple Alliant Energy crewmen.

City of Pella Electric Superintendent Nate Spurgeon tells KNIA/KRLS News the gas line was not marked properly for electric crews. Alliant’s contractor, USIC, marked an abandoned steel line instead of the active gas pipes. The crew hand dug and successfully verified the line where it was marked. They began to use the trencher well clear of the marked area and visually verified the line when they hit the active plastic line three feet away from the marks, causing the emergency. Alliant requires any time that a gas line is hit to call 911.

Another fire call came in at 3:10 p.m. along Highway T-17 south of Pella.

No injuries were reported at the various calls.
