While the year may not have ended exactly the way the Eagles’ boys dreamed it would at the onset, their season ended in victory.
Pella Christian knocked off Anamosa in the State Consolation Finals 77-73 in overtime to earn 3rd place in the Class 2A tournament for the second straight time, as heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
The Blue Raiders’s fast tempo put the Eagles in an eventual seven point hole in the 1st half, but a 7-2 run before the break without Levi Jungling on the floor closed it to within two.
Pella Christian then came out with one of their best offensive quarters of the season in the third period, scoring 21 points with both the inside and outside games working. Free throw shooting iced the game in overtime after a back-and-forth 4th quarter.
Assistant Coach Marv Van Wyk was impressed with the performances of the postmen Jeremy Van Beek and Kenden Veenstra — who scored a combined 23 points, a pair he says were a big part to the team’s successful run.
“We felt going into this game that we’d have opportunities for our posts to score,” he says. “The way they spread their defense out and they’re not necessarily as big as some of the teams we played.”
Five different players scored in double-digits, including 15 points and nine rebounds from Graham Howerzyl, and Levi Jungling scored 15 and dished 10 assists for a double-double.
The Eagles finish the 2016 campaign at 18-10 and say farewell to five seniors.
