The Knoxville School Board’s proposed lunch policy was discussed Tuesday night.

The district is currently carrying $50,000 dollars in lunch debt. The school is considering alternative lunches for students with unpaid balances. School officials were on hand to answer questions.
Major topics of the meeting included getting students who qualify for the free and reduced lunch program enrolled, establishing an endowment, and questioning the wisdom of the policy. During the meeting participants took to calling the alternative lunch: “The Cheese Sandwich of Shame.” Meeting organizer Megan Suhr said she is opposed to the policy because she feels that children should not be shamed. Suhr said that the parents should take responsibility, not the children. Business Manager Craig Mobley told KNIA/KRLS News that while he understands why the policy is unpopular, it is a necessary evil, because it’s effective and holds parents accountable. The School Board will hold a public hearing on their proposed action Monday, March 28, at the administration building at 7:00 p.m.
