James Pumphrey

This spring, James Pumphrey and several of his friends are repairing and maintaining bicycles that could be loaned to people who need low-cost transportation in Pella.

Pumphrey says they are now expanding their bicycle repair service through the Well, fixing additional bikes to be sold at The Well Thrift Store on Oskaloosa Street, with the goal of repairing 100 by the end of April. Bikes can be donated at The Well Thrift Store during normal business hours, and the group making repairs is also looking for volunteers.

“We can use bicycles in any condition,” he says. “We will repair the ones we can, and we will use the others for spare parts.”

Volunteers can call him at 641-629-0725. Pumphrey is enthusiastic about the project.

“I know that transportation is often an issue for clients of The Well, and biking can be a good solution for the people who are physically able to do it. And they gain the benefit of exercise as well.”

The bicycle sale opens at The Well Thrift store the weekend of April 29 and 30. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
