An officer with the Pella Police Department was injured in an altercation with a Pella man accused of driving under the influence.
Matthew Van Klompenburg, 32, of Pella is charged with OWI-3rd offense, a class D felony, and 1st degree harassment, assault on a peace officer causing injury, and interference with official acts causing injury, all aggravated misdemeanors.
According to court records, the Pella Police Department received a tip about a possible intoxicated driver coming from Casey’s in Monroe. Officers stopped Van Klompenburg’s vehicle near Exit 40 on Highway 163 after witnessing numerous traffic violations.
Van Klompenburg refused all field sobriety tests, and police attempted to arrest him. He resisted and became involved in a brief scuffle with officers and injured the hand of one of those attempting to subdue him. After he was placed in the vehicle, Van Klompenburg threatened police on the way back to jail.
Van Klompenburg was arrested in January for an OWI, after he was involved in a single-vehicle crash on T-14. He’s pled not guilty to those charges. Van Klompenburg also has two prior OWI convictions.
