Three Knoxville students and seven Pella Christian students have won Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards.
Judges attended and critiqued each performance. Knoxville students Janna DeMoss and Shannon Yocum were selected to sing excerpts from their role in “Legally Blonde” at the awards showcase on June 6 at the Civic Center in Des Moines and Jinni Dingle received a special mention. In addition, DeMoss and Yocum have been invited to compete for the “Triple Threat Award.” Pella Christian High School students earned seven awards from the showcase. The group’s fall production of “West Side Story” earned Outstanding Musical Production, the top honor in the Iowa High School Musical Theatre awards. Joel Larson, Kara Zondervan, Jimmy Beyer, and Michael Vande Wal were all recognized for their performances, and Larson was also nominated to audition for a spot representing the state at the National High School Musical Theatre awards in January. If selected at the showcase students will travel to New York City to work with Broadway coaches and perform on Broadway for the Jimmy Awards on Monday, June 27.
