The first three innings made it seem like we were in for an early-season pitcher’s duel against two state tournament foes. However, a nine-run, 14-batter inning for Dallas Center – Grimes ultimately did in the Pella High softball team last night in a 12 – 2, five-inning affair heard live on 92.1 KRLS. The Fillies grabbed a one-run lead with a two-out RBI knock in the third, and behind a dealing Allie Boender on the rubber for D-C-G, it was more than enough. The junior threw five innings, striking out nine, and not allowing a hit until the fifth, on a comebacker off the bat of Sidnie Van Vark. Coach Robin Llewellyn said despite the game ending early, there were many positives to take away from the loss. The Lady Dutch drop to 3 – 3 with the loss. On the baseball diamond, it was the same score, but on the other side of the LED board. The Little Dutch blew out the Mustangs, 12 – 2, thanks to another asserting effort by future Iowa Hawkeye, Grant Judkins. Jud threw seven innings and struck out ten batters, and added three RBI and a home run with a 2-for-3 night at the plate. Jaden Rolffs had two hits, and AJ Kingery drove in two runs. Pella’s boys are now 4 – 1 overall; the girls are in action tonight versus Lynnville-Sully, and the boys of summer are back at it this evening in Chariton.
