The Knoxville Summer Lunch Program served its first free lunches for children today.

More than 40 meals were served to a group of mostly young children. Meals are offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week and everyone 18 and younger is welcome to a meal. The program also includes educational and health related components which change depending upon the sponsoring organization. The first group was West Elementary. Anne Fields, Co-Chair of the Summer Lunch Program says they offer more than nutrition. Children will be able to take part in a variety of activities through the Senior Center, library and other groups throughout the summer. The lunches are served at the First United Methodist Church across the street from City Hall from 11:30-12 p.m. The program will continue through August 31.
