There have been several drownings in Iowa this summer. Drownings can be prevented if proper procedures are followed.

Judi Van Hulzen with Marion County Public Health says drowning is a leading cause of death for children ages 1-14. Van Hulzen says adequate supervision and use of the buddy system can go a long way to prevent accidents in the water. Because drowning occurs quickly and quietly, adults should not be involved in any other distracting activity while supervising children, even if lifeguards are present. Van Hulzen adds CPR training is important to saving lives and encourages everyone to contact public health for information about training.
