With Class 1A and 2A quarterfinal games in the books, Pella High’s baseball team will try to become the second Marion County school to win in the round of 8 at Principal Park tonight when they play Humboldt in the Class 3A state tournament opener. The Wildcats come in having won 19 of their previous 20 games, and will likely start their ace, Chris Witzke, who leads the state in strikeouts with 122 in 65-plus innings of work. Coach Jesse Jablonski counters with Grant Judkins, who has a staff-low ERA of 0.71 and has struck out 108 batters. Jablonski says the top of the Wildcats’ order does the brunt of the work at the plate, so a key to success tonight will be to limit how much damage their bats do. Humboldt also is very speedy; they’ve swiped 95 bases successfully this year and have only been caught seven times. Tonight’s game can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS, KNIAKRLS.com, and via our free KRLS mobile app. Andrew Schneider and Cory Houser will provide the call starting with the pre-game show at 7:00 p.m. and first pitch scheduled for 7:30.
