Governor Terry Branstad is confident the Republican Party can wrestle full control of the state’s political agenda in this November’s election.
Branstad feels the candidates are in place to take the Senate from Democrats.
“I think this is our best opportunity since 1996 to win control of the senate,” he says. “We have six Republican candidates in districts running against incumbents where there are more registered Republicans than Democrats–and they’re working really hard.”
The governor says a challenge in western Iowa to Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal’s seat may weaken Democratic fundraising efforts elsewhere.
Branstad said last week in Otley he and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds have other plans to support Republican candidates around the state, but did not specify how he’d try to help.
