The Central College women’s tennis teams opened the 2016 season over the weekend with a pair of lopsided victories in Illinois – beating both Knox and Monmouth by identical 8-1 scores.
Before the season started, head coach Ryun Ferrell said that one of his goals with the team this year had nothing to do with wins or losses, but rather establishing a more confident mentality.
“We want the girls to think – “We’ve been here before, we’ve played you guys before, you’re not bringing anything special to the party. Bring it. Let’s get to work” – And if we win we win, and if we lose we lose, but gosh, don’t go out there with your eyes wide open like a deer in the headlights. That’s not going to help.”
That mentality will be put to the test this weekend. The Dutch open Iowa Conference play on Friday at Wartburg, then host their first match of the season Saturday against Coe. The Kohawks have won the last five league championships, and eight of the past ten.
