Last year, the Central College football team surrendered 638 yards and lost a 55-48 shootout to Loras in Dubuque. The Dutch return to the scene of the crime today.
Central comes into the game at 3-0 and ranked 25th in the country, while the Duhawks have been plagued by turnovers so far this season and come in at 0-3.
But Loras has 17 starters back from the team that spent a good portion of last year’s game marching up and down the field against the Dutch. Central coach Jeff McMartin says it’s a fine line between wiping away the memories of that afternoon and using it as motivation for today’s tilt.
“Most of your practice time and preparation time with your players is not to talk about it. You look at what they’re doing this year and spend time on what you’re doing and try to make yourself better. If you talk about it, you talk about it in terms of we can be a better football team than that – we need to be a better football team than that, and here’s an opportunity to prove it. If teams went by what the score was last year, then some teams would never win and some teams would never lose, so you can’t really do that.”
Today’s game between Central and Loras kicks off at 1:00 at the Rock Bowl in Dubuque. Trevor Castle and Cory Houser will call the action live, with the PellaMotors.com Radio Pregame Show at 12:35 on 92.1 KRLS, www.kniakrls.com and the free KRLS mobile app.
