Pella Christian’s volleyball team overcame a 6-17 deficit against Newton in the first set to take it and sweep the Cardinals 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-11) on Senior Night.
Seven service errors in the first set and a host of other mistakes throughout kept the score from becoming lopsided until the third set. Head Coach John Evenhouse says the girls were lacking energy in the pregame, and it took awhile to get momentum going.
“I don’t know if it’s because it was a long week, or it’s been a long two or three weeks with tournaments every Saturday, but they were just kind of dead,” Evenhouse says. “And they tried getting a little more enthusiasm during warm ups, but that’s not enough.”
“We felt the turnaround was a point where they just got kind of unhappy with themselves–a little bit embarrassment, and they just started to say ‘hey, let’s go four or five points at a time,’ and we were able to pull ourselves back in the game and finally win it.”
Balance has been a key focus recently on offense, and the Eagles showed improvement, with four players racking up six or more kills, including Bekah Horstman (14), Maddie Zula (7), Natalie Vos (6), and Sarah Posthuma (6).
The Eagles are 19-7 after their 13th straight win, 4-2 in the conference, and next travel to DCG Tuesday.
