Ground has already broken on the new Casey’s General Store on Main Street just south of downtown Pella.
The construction has been made possible by a Planned Unit Development (PUD) approved by the Pella City Council this week. City Administrator Mike Nardini says the primary reason behind the ordinance was to allow Casey’s the opportunity to make improvements on the property that mitigate some of the impact on adjacent neighbors.
Included in the agreement will be moving the pumps and canopy to the main street side–under current city code, those would be located closer to neighbors on Union Street. Also, the store will be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., otherwise, the station would be allowed to be open 24/7 under code. Casey’s is also required to plant trees and build a fence to buffer the property to those next door.
The PUD also requires the convenience store chain to re-purpose three properties they intend to close within thirty days of opening the new store.
