Lauryn Kramer’s fourth goal of the season propelled Central College’s women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan Saturday afternoon in double overtime.
It was a quarterfinal matchup in the Iowa Conference tournament, and the golden goal sends the Dutch into the semis.
While Kramer gets the headlines, Coach Mike Kobylinski heaped huge praise on his defense for keeping the Prairie Wolves off the scoreboard for 101 minutes.
“I think our defense is one of the best, if not the best, in the league and I think the stats prove that. Our backs do a phenomenal job of preventing shots on frame, and if there are shots, our goalkeepers do a great job of actually catching those soccer balls rather than letting them go in the goal. I thought our back four did outstanding today.”
Central improves to 15-3-1 on the season, and will play at second-seeded Luther Wednesday night at seven o’clock in the Iowa Conference semifinals.
The men, unfortunately, saw their season come to a close in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, falling to Simpson 4-3.
The Storm led 1-0 at halftime before an offensive explosion in the second half. Ian Meentemeyer, Kiel Pederson and Salvador Villanueva all scored for the Dutch, but they couldn’t overcome a hat trick by Garrett Pochop – including the game winner with less than seven minutes left.
Central’s second ends at 11-7.
