Local police are responding to this morning’s news of two officers ambushed in Urbandale.

Des Moines Sgt. Tony Beminio and Urbandale Police Officer Justin Martin were killed overnight in their patrol cars. Scott Michael Greene was placed in custody in Dallas County, and has not been formally charged.

Pella Police Chief Robert Bokinsky says it’s a sad day for all law enforcement, the families of the fallen officers, and the communities they served.

“They lost two officers who were there to protect them, care about them, and make their communities a safer place,” Bokinsky says.

Bokinsky says the department has received additional support from community members in the wake of the tragedy today.

Knoxville Police Chief Dan Losada tells KNIA/KRLS News a tragedy like this one will not go unmourned or unpunished. He says the hearts of all members of the Knoxville Police Department go out to those affected and they hope the person responsible will face justice.

“My heart goes out to all the members of the police family in the Des Moines area,” Losada says.
