Michael Whitworth, an offender assigned to the Iowa State Penitentiary, died Monday while at the University of Iowa Hospital according to the Department of Corrections.

Whitworth was hospitalized due to an incident that occurred at the penitentiary that day. The incident involved an altercation between Whitworth and Lha Southideth-Whiten. The incident remains under investigation and has been referred to the Lee County Attorney’s office for prosecution. There were no staff injuries. Southideth-Whiten is serving a 45 year sentence for out of Polk County for Robbery 1st Degree, and Firearm Possession. Whitworth was 46 years old and was serving a life sentence from Marion County for Kidnapping 1st Degree. He was convicted of confining a woman in a bedroom and repeatedly sexually assaulting her. His sentence began in October 2005.
