Members of local law enforcement agencies made the trip to West Des Moines and Rockwell City to pay final respects to two officers killed last week in the metro.

Pella Police Lt. Paul Haase attended both memorial ceremonies for Des Moines Sgt. Tony Beminio and Urbandale Officer Justin Martin earlier this week.

Haase tells KNIA/KRLS News officers from departments around the nation were represented at the funeral services.

“It’s something I hope never becomes familiar, never becomes something you get used to, because that means it continues to happen,” Haase says.

He also says officers in Pella and in the Des Moines area have been overwhelmed by the support shown from citizens. Haase says both funeral processions were well-attended by many people mourning the losses.

“The overpasses were lined with people, I-80 on Monday was at a standstill on the other lane of people out of their vehicles with their hand over their heart,” he says.

“Just the visual support and just the care that they showed — it’s hard to put into words how it makes you feel.”

In Pella, the Tulip Toren was bathed in blue light following the tragic shootings, and Career Academy of Pella students welded memorial structures for the Des Moines PD and Urbandale Police Department.
