November is Diabetes Awareness Month. All who plan to indulge in eating holiday favorites until the calendar turns to 2017 are encouraged to do so in moderation.
Dietitian and Diabetes Educator Debbie Guild tells KNIA/KRLS News people should not lose sight of positive habits for health that are maintained outside of holiday events.
“You gain a lot of weight and eat a lot of things that maybe you wouldn’t eat the rest of the time of the year,” Guild says. “So thinking about what do you do when it’s not November, December, and January–you eat moderate amounts of portions, you include non-starchy vegetables, you incorporate your activity. So I think we want those things to carry us through November and December and all the hustle and bustle when we are going from this party to that party.”
She encourages healthy eating and exercise behaviors year round to prevent possible development of complications associated with diabetes and prediabetes.
