City of Knoxville Community Service Officer Arlene Worrall tells KNIA/KRLS News the city’s snow removal policy is important because it ensures children can walk to school safely and those who walk in town can avoid injuries from trudging through snow and ice.

She reminds homeowners it’s their responsibility to remove snow and ice from sidewalks within 24 hours of accumulation. Failure to do so may result in fines. Worrall says that for the first snowfall of the year notices were hung on homes that violated the ordinance. She says the city wants to be fair to new homeowners and those who may have been unfamiliar with the ordinance. Worrall continued that those removing snow should note pushing it into city roadways or gutters or dumping removed snow onto someone else’s property is also a violation of city ordinance and may result in a fine.
