A man keeping his daughter’s legacy alive through an annual blood drive at Pella Christian High School was recognized for his efforts.

Mike Hoogeveen, whose daughter Megan died of a rare blood disorder called Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) in 2011, was awarded the LifeServe Blood Center Legacy Award during the 6th annual Megan’s Legacy Blood Drive.

Mike told KNIA/KRLS News he never imagined the support for his daughter would reach this level, and he’s thankful for those who have given blood or money in Megan’s name.

“When I started this, I wanted to replace what Megan had used–183 units, and at the end of the drive we should end up with three times that.”

This year, the drive will top its 500th donor, which according to LiveServe, means Megan’s Legacy has saved or sustained 1500 lives.

State Representative Guy Vander Linden presented the award to Mike at Pella Christian High School.
