The Knoxville City Council met in regular session last night.
The council heard and discussed a balanced budget presentation for the 2017-18 fiscal year from City Manager Aaron Adams. Adams says the budget is tight this year, but allows department heads to cover their costs and accomplish the goals they have set for the coming year. The council made no changes to the proposed budget, but had a vigorous discussion about appropriate use of hotel motel tax funds. The fund, which brings in about $90,000 per year is intended for economic development and tourism. City Councilman Rick Kingery questioned some of the funding amounts and suggested some of the money be reallocated for the creation of a convention and visitors bureau in Knoxville. The council also set a public hearing to plan the replacement of the Montgomery Street sewer system, among other items.
