A Nevada woman accused of attempting to extort a local man accepted a plea deal in Marion County Court.

Mary LeAnn Nelson, 35, pled guilty to extortion, a class D felony. She was sentenced to probation and ordered to pay restitution. A prostitution charge was dismissed pursuant to the plea agreement.

According to the Pella Police Department and court records, an unidentified Pella man contacted Nelson for “a massage” in November. He paid $500 to Nelson, and later admitted to police they had consensual sex in exchange for money. Nelson is accused of contacting the man’s mother and claimed she was sexually assaulted by him, but if the mother paid her, she wouldn’t go to police. The man said Nelson told him she needed money as well. Nelson received a $1500 check from the family after making “threatening” comments. Police say she attempted to receive additional payment from the family again later that month, but they contacted officers, which led to the investigation and eventual arrest.
