15 area wrestlers competed on day one of the Iowa State High School Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines yesterday, and 14 will continue wrestling on day two starting this morning.

Starting with the morning session in class 3A, four Indianola wrestlers still have their sights set on a state title. Kobey Pritchard at 113lbs, Lance Runyon at 132lbs, Kade Kolarik at 170lbs, and Egan Lickiss at heavyweight all won their first-round matchups to advance to the quarterfinals. Connor Sexton at 120lbs lost his opening match but kept his season alive with a consolation round win, while Reece Bowlin at 195lbs fell in both of his matches and was eliminated. Pella’s lone wrestler Keegan Poole at heavyweight is also still in the winner’s bracket with a 10-0 decision to advance.

For the afternoon class 1A session, the quarter of Pleasantville Trojan wrestlers would represent Marion County with both Griffen McBride at 160lbs and Chaz Clark at 220lbs both winning their opening round bouts to advance to the quarterfinals. Sawyer Phillips at 152lbs fell in a tough 3-2 decision to put himself in the consolation round, but picked up a 3-2 victory to keep his season alive through today, while Will Anthony also fell in his opening matchup but came through in the consolation round with a win by fall.

In the evening class 2A session, Knoxville’s Matthew Landsperger at 195lbs picked up an 8-2 win to advance to the quarterfinals, while a pair of PCM wrestlers did the same, Xavier Miller at 145 with a 10-8 sudden victory, and Jarron Trausch at 170lbs with a major decision 12-3 win. PCM’s 160lb wrestler Lucas Roland lost a heartbreaker 6-3 in his first-round grapple, but is still alive after a win by fall in the consolation round.
