It was recently announced that an ongoing review of testing procedures at the Fire Service Training Bureau has discovered more firefighters have been affected by improperly scored tests.
739 additional firefighters at 94 fire departments across Iowa have been identified as needing retesting.
Knoxville Rural Township Fire Department Chief Kenny Thompson tells KNIA/KRLS News a couple of his firefighters were informed they need to be retested and Thompson says he will let them retest if that’s what they want.
Knoxville Fire and Rescue Chief, Jim Mitchell adds that the testing is not a state requirement so it doesn’t affect his department as much, but he does want all his firefighters to be certified. Mitchell says that it is more of a pride in ownership type thing and that he will keep requiring his guys to be certified.
Pella Fire Chief Doug Van Gorkom tells KNIA/KRLS News as of this week, nobody currently in the department has needed to retake the certification test. He says the City of Pella department does require certification, but any participation at the state level is voluntary.
Since the review the Fire Service Training Bureau is offering to retest all firefighters affected at no cost.
