Two local jazz bands earned top finishes in the Iowa Jazz Championships yesterday in Des Moines.
Pella placed 4th in Class 3A, with Erica Nossaman earning mention as Outstanding Performer.
North Mahaska was champion in Class 1A, their sixth championship since 2009. Jack Munson and Caleb Gipple were selected as Outstanding Performers in their class as well. A message from their band director indicates many of the band members played with a heavy heart.
From the North Mahaska Facebook Page:
“A message from Mr. Peiffer: NM Jazz was awarded 1st Place in Class 1A April 4th. They played with class and energy led by senior desire. As excited as we were it was bitter sweet having lost bandmate, Jacob Van’t Sant (Tina Edge Van’t Sant) on Monday. Jacob was the type of young man to stand in the rain and help unload the jazz band trailer voluntarily. (jazz not being his thing) Need the marching band trailer loaded? No need to ask Jacob, he’s already there. A fine young man indeed. Our hearts go out to the Van’t Sant family at this time. Many directors sent their condolences along from all over the state as when one loses a student we all do. Yes, NM Jazz had a great day in Ames on Tuesday. But when we get home reality will set back in. We will be missing our friend, Jacob.”
