State lawmakers have recently decided to scrap a 3rd grade summer reading initiative that was aimed at helping Iowa 3rd graders who struggle with reading.

The program was designed for 3rd graders who fail grade level reading tests at the end of the school year, who would not be promoted to fourth grade unless they participated in the summer reading program. Senator Amy Sinclair tells KNIA/KRLS News the state had the Iowa Reading Research Center analyze the program and the state found that the gains during the program were minor. The center found that intensive interventions during the school year helped more than the summer program. Sinclair adds that the governor’s office recommendation was that school districts could continue the program if they wish, but to require the program would not be the best use of their dollars.
