Making its first appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament ever, the Central College women’s golf team showed poise posting a 336, tying its lowest score of the spring yesterday.

Central sits in a tie for 16th with Hanover College of Indiana. While they are 35 strokes behind leader and defending national champion Rhodes College of Tennessee in the four-round tourney, Tim Wikinson’s squad is just one shot off the cut line, which will happen after three rounds are in the books.

“I like the idea of the cut because I think it gives us something to shoot for. I think that helps them stay focused instead of this turning into a field trip or ‘hey, we made Nationals, let’s just have fun’. We’re competing and we want to do the best we can and this is a step for us to be able to compete at this level.”

Brittany Coppess turned in the low round of the day for the Dutch, carding an 81. Coppess finished off her front nine birding three of the last four holes.

Cierra Pulse posted an 84, Alison Kretzinger shot 85, Emily Opsal posted 86 and junior Molly Timmerman shot 89 on the par-72 Bay Oaks Country Club.
Round two of the tourney continues today with Central teeing off in the second wave at 1:15 this afternoon.
