The Marion County Board of Supervisors approved a 28E agreement with the City of Pella to help enforce parking ticket payments.
The Pella City Council passed their part of the resolution at their April 18th meeting that denies renewal of vehicle registration for Marion County residents with overdue parking tickets issued in Pella. Pella Police Chief Robert Bokinsky tells KNIA/KRLS News the measure is aimed to incentivize paying parking tickets and other violations on time.
“What will happen as far as the 28E agreement that we’re entering into with the county, is that if somebody approaches the county treasurer’s office to renew their registration, and they have an unsatisfied parking citation, simply stated, the treasurer’s office will not renew their registration until the fine is satisfied,” Bokinsky says.
He says the resolution was presented to the Board of Supervisors and Pella City Council due to numerous fines not being paid and frequent offenders racking up violations. The community has nearly $10,000 in unsatisfied parking debt, and many local residents have multiple unpaid tickets. A similar law is currently in place in Knoxville and is allowable under Iowa code. Tickets in Pella can be paid at the main window of the Pella Police Department on Liberty Street.
