A big seventh inning propelled the Pella baseball team to a 13-4 victory last night in Grinnell, while the Lady Dutch fell just short in their late rally, 6-5.

The Little Dutch were down 4-0 going into the seventh when eight straight hitters reached base with one out, 18 total batters came to the plate in the inning, and 13 run scored.

Avery Van Zee’s two-run double was the go-ahead hit, followed immediately by a two-run double by Landon Vander Leest. Tyler Hillman and Van Zee then delivered two-run singles later in the inning.

Van Zee went four-for-five on the night and Gabe Thomas was three-for-four.

The win improves Pella’s record to 7-8 on the season and they move to 4-6 in league play.

Pella’s softball team was knotted up 2-2 with the Tigers after five innings, then Grinnell came up with four sixth inning runs.

The Lady Dutch didn’t cave, fighting back for three runs in the seventh before their comeback bid was squelched.

Six different Pella players had hits, as the Lady Dutch took advantage of five Grinnell errors on the evening. Madison Parks, Alizabeth Van Dusseldorp and Claire Corbin had Pella’s RBIs.

The Lady Dutch are 4-17 overall and 1-9 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.

Both Pella teams have today off to prepare for tomorrow night’s Tulip City showdowns against Pella Christian.
