Pella Christian played host to a softball tournament Saturday at the Pella Sports Park, and the Eagles knocked off a pair of ranked foes.
Pella Christian, ranked eighth in class 2A, started the day with 1-0 win over Perry, the seventh ranked team in class 4A.
The lone run of the game came in the fifth inning when Lizzy Van Manen led off with a double and then came home to score on Amanda Harrill’s two-out double. Emma Schnell threw a complete game, allowing just two hits and two walks while working around three Eagle errors defensively to pitch the shutout. She struck out nine.
The Eagles then came back later in the day and knocked off class 1A #12 Belle Plaine, 6-1 in eight innings. Tied at one going into extra innings, Schnell reached on an error to start the eighth, then scored all five runs with two outs, starting with Sophie Howerzyl’s RBI single.
Pella Christian is now 21-5 on the season, and Friday’s win over Grinnell kept them in first place in the Little Hawkeye Conference at 12-4.
Both the Eagles’ softball and baseball squads will host Dallas Center-Grimes tonight. For the girls, it’s a jayvee / varsity doubleheader, while the boys will play a pair of varsity games. Andrew Schneider will call the softball game live on 92.1 KRLS, beginning with first pitch at approximately 7:30.
