American Legion Post 89 in Pella welcomed the organization’s National Commander Friday afternoon.

Charles E. Schmidt spoke about the importance of the American Legion during his time in the Tulip City to members from Pella, Oskaloosa, and New Sharon. Schmidt tells KNIA/KRLS News the American Legion remains relevant thanks to strong membership and their commitment to serve veterans and their families.

“We have inherited a great legacy, so it’s about our turn and our watch to convey and pass that legacy on to the next generation so that the future generations of men and women serving this country and their families are taken care of, and they will have an advocate for them,” he says.

Schmidt also spoke to the importance of youth programs and keeping the future engaged in civic activity through various Legion contests and the annual Boys State program.

Schmidt was in Iowa to tour American Legion posts and the VA Central Iowa Health Care System in Des Moines. He received flour from the Vermeer Mill and other gifts from Post 89 and left his own special memorabilia for the local legion members.
