An excessive heat warning is in place for south central Iowa through Saturday.
And during the months of July and August, dangerous heat is only made worse by Iowa’s leading commodity. According to the National Weather Service, evaporation from corn crops can add five to ten degrees daily to the dew point temperature on a hot summer day. However, according to state climatologist Harry Hillaker, the actual impact on what a person feels is lessened because the additional moisture can lower the air temperature.
