Today we continue the countdown of the Top 10 sports stories of the 2016-2017 school year at Pella High School with number nine.

On May 11th, the Little Dutch boys track and field team put it all together en route to a district championship.

Pella scored 137 team points and automatically qualified 10 events for state that evening.

Junior Avery Van Zee qualified in four events, and said that he wasn’t expecting that level of team success, but was excited to see how it translated at state.

“Never in a million years would I have thought that this year’s team would have been district champs. But we had a bunch of young guys who came in and put in the hard work that needed to be done. They proved themselves throughout the season and gutted it out. We couldn’t have done it without them. This is a young team that has a lot of potential and I’m so blessed to be able to run with them.”

The Little Dutch, who had won the 2016 boys team title but lost a load of talent to graduation, had a solid weekend on the blue oval again this spring, finishing in 18th place.
