Today we continue the countdown of the Top 10 sports stories of the 2016-2017 school year at Pella High School with number two.

A 28-18 over Webster City on November 17th capped a third straight undefeated state championship for the Pella High football team, and you heard every snap live on 92.1 KRLS.

The Dutch led 14-3 at halftime thanks to an Avery Van Zee 10-yard touchdown run and a Nick Finney 18-yard toss to Donovan Holterhaus less than minute before intermission.

But it wasn’t an easy race to the finish line. Finney threw an interception, the only turnover of the game, midway through the third quarter, which led to a Lynx touchdown to cut the score to 14-10.

The Little Dutch answered with a two-yard Finney run after he threw a 26 yard pass to Julian Viersen on fourth-and-23. But the Lynx returned the ensuing kick deep into Pella territory, leading to another touchdown, and the score was 21-18.

Pella had an answer again, a 29-yard post strike from Finney to Donovan Holterhaus to stretch the lead to the final 28-18 margin.

While the offense had the highlights, the Pella defense stepped up big against Webster City’s single-wing offense. The Lynx racked up 247 rushing yards, but Ryan Van Wyk and his posse held their own all night long.

“Their spin back offense is a really tough offense to defend against – it’s really assignment football. We struggled a little bit early but in the end we came out on top. We scored on them on offense and put a little pressure on them on offense, and that’s what sealed the deal for us.”

Van Wyk’s receiving partner Holterhaus stuffed the stat sheet and was chosen as the game’s MVP with a class 3-A state championship game record 10 catches for 181 yards and two touchdowns.

Finney finished 15-of-22 passing for 263 yards and two touchdowns, and added 66 hard-earned rushing yards on 22 carries and a score.

The Little Dutch finish the season with a 13-0 record, marking their 41st consecutive victory, the fourth longest streak in Iowa history.
