Away from the gridiron, the rest of Central College’s fall sports athletes were fairly busy over the past few days. On Saturday, the Dutch women’s tennis team came close to beating perennial tennis power Coe, but fell, 5 – 4. The two schools split the six singles matches, but the Kohawks’ top two doubles teams beat the Dutch, 8 – 2 in both match-ups.
The Dutch women’s cross country team took 11th place at the St. Olaf Invitational also on Saturday morning. Central was led on the 6,000-meter course by senior Holly McKinney, who finished 37th individually with a 24:10.1 race time. The men’s runners finished seventh in the same venue on an 8,000-meter course. Senior Mark Fairley had the best time for Central, clocking in at 26:08.1.
Back on Friday, the Central women’s soccer team moved to 5 – 1 overall with a 4 – 0 win over Principia College; the Dutch men beat the same opponent 3 – 0 to improve to 4 – 0; the men’s tennis squad, though depleted, beat Grand View University, 6 – 3 in their first fall match of the season; and Central’s volleyball team came up short in five sets at Augustana College, 20 – 25, 25 – 19, 25 – 19, 19 – 25, and 15 – 12. Central was up 12 – 9 in the fifth set, but relinquished six straight points to drop to 6 – 6 overall in 2017.
