New Pella High boys basketball coach Derek Schulte is dealing with a familiar problem that’s been a part of the Little Dutch program the last four years.
With another deep run in the football playoffs, Pella’s multi-sports athletes have had very little time on the hardwood. In fact, while basketball practices are now two weeks old, Pella has only had its full roster for two days after giving the football players a short break between sports.
Schulte says that it’s a problem he’s happy to deal with.
“That means that we’ve got student athletes in a program of excellence here that we hope we can continue to build on. Even though it does provide some challenges for us to get things established, we’re excited to be in that situation. We went through the first week of practice with non-football and treated it as normal. And then this week we’ve had to go back and review things because we’ve got a whole new group of guys in the gym.”
The Little Dutch are scrimmaging today against Ottumwa, and they’ll host Gilbert in the season opener Tuesday at Pella High.
